If you live near Baltimore then you know the amount of rain we got last night and today was just crazy. I live near the Patapsaco river. In fact you could say it's my personal playground. Well after it rained all night then rained all day it finally stopped. The temp is a nice cool 72 degrees so out for a ride. I have a favorite trail I ride along the Ptap. I haven't been back there since winter and it is way grown over now. The road is really 2 single tracks now. Its made up of ground concrete chunks. sorta like riding rail ballast. I entered the same way I always do and realized quickly the water was deep and flowing. The river was still in its banks but the side streams which drain in were really deep. I turned around and decided to enter from the other side, about a 2.5 mile road ride to get there. I ride in and get about halfway thru when I come to another deep section. I decide to ride on thru. Hit a lower gear and go. Before I know it the water is halfway up the fork and it's flowing hard. No worries though I got right thru it. I believe in the saying look where you want to go not where you don't. Pedaled anther half mile or so and there is another deep spot. No problem I got thru the other one. Again the water is half way up my forks the entire bike is in it deep. Suddenly something comes up out of the water directly in front, sticks its head up and hisses. Its a mud turtle the size of a manhole cover. Now I figure he's pissed and if i hit him he's gonna be more pissed. Maybe pissed enough to take a bite outta me. They don't let go unless you cut the head off I've heard! Anyway I manage to pull the front end up and push thru hard enough to bounce off the side of his shell, get to where the water is only a couple of inches deep stop and look back. Gone just some bubbles, not a trace. That was wild! And I don't have a photo to prove it. Its amazing how fast the human brain can think. The whole turtle incident took maybe 20 seconds. This is why I love riding gravel!!
Are you talking mud turtle or snapping turtle? I know exactly how much rain you had down there as I flew into BWI from Denver and then had to drive thru crazy Friday night traffic to get up to Pa. You couldn't pay me enough money to do that drive again. Zman
If it was easy it wouldn't be a memory. You just hope you don't have all your memories in the same ride. been there dun that Zman
